09-03-2021 Flow XI laboratory is now online!

  • Rigaku XRD

The new FlowXl laboratory is equipped with a state of the art Rigaku XtaLAB Synergy Custom X-ray diffractometer. Supplied with a MM007-HF (Cu) microfocus rotating anode X-ray source, equipped with ‘VariMax’ Very High Flux (‘VM-VHF’) X-ray optics which yields a beam with ultra-high brightness at the sample, optimised for data collection from the weakest of diffracting samples. The system is also configured with a Hybrid Photon Counting (HPC) X-ray detector, the HyPix-6000HE, with high dynamic range, fast readout speed and extremely low noise, the system is set-up to collect low noise data quickly, ideal for in-situ diffraction studies of samples in flow. The new Synergy Custom diffractometer will allow users to easily mount a variety of in-situ flow cells and microfluidic devices onto the robust XtalCheckS accessory which sits on a four circle goniometer for complete data collection.

  • Labram HR Evolution from HORIBA

We are pleased to announce the arrival of our new Raman spectrometer, the Labram HR Evolution from HORIBA Jobin Yvon. It comes equipped with both green (532 nm) and red (785 nm) lasers with respective ultra low frequency (ULF) modules allowing measurements in the sub-100cm-1 region, with measurements down to 10cm-1 routinely available. Additionally, two SuperHead fiber optic probes will facilitate in-situ measurements in tandem with the new X-ray diffractometer.

Fiona, Jo, Xuefeng & Ila attended the Bragg Centre Symposium at the University of Leeds. We saw great talks from a range of disciplines across Materials Science, and received updates on the equipment and expertise available at Leeds through the Bragg Centre for Materials Research and further afield through The Henry Royce Institute.

20-12-2019
Xuefeng made an oral & poster presentation in the Postdoc Conference of School of Chemistry in University of Leeds on microfluidic crystallisation separation.

13-12-2019
Fiona and Xuefeng went to the Diamond Light Source in Harwell for synchrotron experiments. On-chip SAXS/WAXS experiments were carried out to explore the early-stage crystallisation.

Ila gave a talk at the 15th International Symposium on Biomineralization in Munich, with the title: “Affimer®-directed control over calcium carbonate polymorphs”. Comprising 89 oral presentations and interesting poster sessions presenting the latest developments in the biomineralization field, it offered a great opportunity to catch up with researchers from all over the world and to discuss topics related to crystallisation and biominerals!

Welcome Xuefeng! Our new microfluidicist PDRA has joined us from Chongqing University, in China.

01-07-2019 to 04-07-2019
Jo also took her poster to the Microscience Microscopy Congress which was hosted at the original Manchester in the UK. It was great to catch up with the latest research pushing at the boundaries of what microscopy can do, and Jo volunteered as a helper for the event.

22-06-2019 to 28-06-2019
Jo and a few others from the Meldrum Group attended the Crystal Growth and Assembly GRS and GRC conferences hosted at Southern New Hampshire University, Manchester, New Hampshire, USA. There were numerous talks and posters on cutting edge crystallisation research presented by leaders in the field, and Jo presented a poster on, “Confinement Controlled Calcium Sulfate Polymorphism.”

26-04-2019 to 28-04-2019
The Meldrum Group took a trip to Selside in North Yorkshire. We took walks in the countryside, played board games, saw some new lambs and a few of the group went caving. It was great fun getting to socialise with everyone in the group, and cooking and getting rained on together in the glorious UK spring weather was great fun.

15-01-2019
The inaugural Bragg Centre Symposium. Fiona contributed an oral presentation, “Multiscale Control Over Single Crystal Nanocomposites,” and Jo presented a poster, “Confinement Controlled Calcium Sulfate Polymorphism.” This was a great introduction to the facilities that will be available at Leeds through the Bragg Centre for Materials Research.
